Protect Your Pup’s Paws:

As summer temperatures soar in South Florida, it’s important to be aware of the dangers hot pavement can pose to our furry friends. Dogs’ paws are sensitive and can easily burn on hot surfaces, leading to discomfort, pain, and even injury. Here are some tips to keep your pup’s paws safe and cool during these hot months:

1. Walk During Cooler Hours

Avoid taking your dog for walks during the peak heat of the day. Early mornings and late evenings are the best times to go out. If you must walk your dog in the middle of the day, try to keep to shaded areas as much as possible.

2. Test the Pavement

Before heading out, test the pavement with the back of your hand. If you can’t hold it there for more than 5 seconds, it’s too hot for your dog’s paws. Opt for grassy areas or invest in paw protectors.

3. Paw Protection

Consider using dog booties to protect your pup’s paws from the hot pavement. If your dog isn’t a fan of booties, paw wax can provide a protective barrier against the heat.

4. Keep Hydrated

Ensure your dog stays hydrated. Carry a portable water bowl and take breaks in the shade to let your dog drink and cool down.

5. Regular Paw Checks

After walks, check your dog’s paws for any signs of burns, blisters, or cuts. Keep an eye out for excessive licking or limping, which can indicate paw pain. If you notice any issues, consult your veterinarian.

6. Paw Care Routine

Keep your dog’s paw pads moisturized with a paw balm. Dry, cracked paws can be more susceptible to burns and other injuries. Regularly trimming your dog’s nails can also prevent them from spreading their toes and exposing more of their paw pads to the hot surface.

7. Create a Cool Path

If you have a yard, create a cool walking path with mulch, grass, or artificial turf that doesn’t get as hot as pavement. This gives your dog a safe space to roam without the risk of burning their paws.

8. Stay Indoors

When it’s excessively hot, it might be best to skip the walk and play indoors instead. Engage your dog with toys and games inside to keep them active and entertained.

Conclusion

All really good advice. Snub nosed dogs in particular should be kept inside.
